New Luxury Hotel to Open in Nice
Plaza de la Mediterranee
15, Promenade des Anglais, Nice

The world famous Negresco Hotel (see NiteDine review) in Nice will have some new competition in December with the opening of the new Plaza de la Mediterranee. This much-anticipated opening after a twelve-year gap will further add to the glamour of the area that overlooks the ocean and is inspired by the wonderful Promenade des Anglais. Designed by architects Olivier Clement Cacoub and Maurice Giauffre, the idea is to bring back the glamour of the thirties when the original building was launched as a casino. Nice is one of my favorite places in the world, so I just had to get the word out as soon as possible.

The interior of Plaza de la Mediterranee is designed by SM Design and Sybille de Margerie, who has been responsible for many of the interiors of the Hotel Crillon in Paris. General Manager Sylvain Ercoli and some of his staff were in Los Angeles recently to let the word out about this exciting new project. No wonder this guy comes across as a class act - he was trained at Cornell University in New York.

This new four-star luxury hotel will have nine floors consisting of 188 rooms and twelve suites, most of which have a large balcony with a panoramic view either of the sea, or of the hills that span out behind the city. Gourmets will be looking forward to the cuisine of chef Bruno Sahn, who will be going in the direction of classical Mediterranean cuisine with an oriental theme. This small intimate restaurant will seat 60 on the inside, and 30 outside. NiteDine is planning to check it out in the New Year.

There will be five conference and banqueting areas on the third floor along with an auditorium, and the hotel will be pushing hard for conference and business activity. All this will be taking place under the watchful eye of Sylvain, who also has the enviable task of managing the world class Hotel Martinez in Cannes, a position he has held for two years.

Outdoors, a vast pool will be heated year long, and if that is not enough then the large fitness rooms, Turkish baths or cardio training equipment should do the trick. There is also the casino, developed by the Partouche Group, with all the latest technology available.

As many of you already know, the French Riviera consistently delivers around 300 days of sun a year, has wonderful museums and galleries, and in Nice in particular, a stunning outdoors market, and a brilliant contrast between old world Nice and the modern era. The sole objective of the new venue is to become the "luxury hotel of reference" for Nice, the French Riviera and the world. Time will tell if they can achieve this, but it sure will be fun finding out.
